About

Youth Education and Sports (YES) stands as a resilient testament to the determination and initiative of the refugee community within the Kakuma camp and Kalobeyei integrated settlement in Northwest Kenya. Founded as an independent Refugee-Led Organization, YES operates under the auspices of the Women Educational Researches of Kenya (WERK), a registered membership organization governed by the Societies Act of Kenya. The genesis of YES can be traced back to a visionary pursuit of social justice and refugee empowerment through post-secondary education, aimed at fostering mutual benefit for both students and their communities. Its deep-seated roots within the Kakuma/Kalobeyei community have played a pivotal role in expanding its reach to qualified post-secondary learners. Embarking on this journey, YES has seamlessly integrated a comprehensive social-emotional learning program, applied arts, and sports into its framework, a strategic addition made in 2019 that solidified its bonds with the community. The pivotal year of 2020 marked a significant milestone for YES as it realized its vision of autonomy, evolving into a fully-fledged independent refugee-led organization while continuing to find a nurturing home within WERK. This transformation positioned YES as a specialized entity dedicated to providing an immersive, holistic, and contextually relevant higher education experience for university students in Kakuma and Kalobeyei. Central to its approach are pillars of quality digital pedagogy, 21st-century skills, and Social-Emotional Learning frameworks, ensuring a dynamic and impactful learning environment.
